Roles & Responsibilities
The role of a Block Captain and Blockwatcher is to help be the eyes and ears for HPD and provide feedback to the coordinator. We are looking for good neighbors who are trustworthy, responsive, and can set a good example. Please use the Block Captain/Blockwatcher sign-up form if interested.
Here are some frequently asked questions regarding the roles and responsibilities of a Block Captain and Blockwatcher:
Q: What is the difference between a Block Captain and a Blockwatcher?
A: Block Captains and Blockwatchers are both NWWP volunteer roles that support the program by looking out for each other and our neighbors as ʻohana. Block Captains are those who also want to serve on the NWWP leadership committee.
Q: How much time will a Block Captain and Blockwatcher be required to commit to the program? I'm interested in the role, but I work full time and have other commitments.
A: There is no committed time requirement for a BC/BW and it is completely voluntary. If the only time you have is the drive in the neighborhood to and from work, then just being observant, recognizing unusual activity, and reporting it appropriately will help the program. Any amount of time that a BC/BW commits to the program is appreciated. BC's will also have the opportunity to attend the Puna NW monthly leadership meetings if interested and access to resources provided by the HPD Community Policing Officers.
Q: Will the NWWP program require Block Captains and Blockwatchers to use discretion, confidentiality, and respect the privacy of residents?
A: Yes, this is part of being trustworthy, setting a good example, and being a good neighbor. We would hope that all residents would follow this and not just a BC/BW. We encourage everyone to look out for each other, and not against each other. If anyone has concerns about a BC/BW or the program, please contact the program coordinator at keaauaglots@gmail.com.
Q: Will the Block Captains and Blockwatchers be patrolling my block and then report to all the neighbors what they saw for them to gossip?
A: BC/BW's are not required to patrol the block. Since we have public county roads, we can have HPD perform the patrolling if there is a safety or security concern. If a BC/BW notices a safety or security issue, then it should be reported appropriately and in a timely manner. Gossip is unwelcomed and has no place in the NWWP since it negatively affects the wellness and well-being of residents in our community. The goal of the NWWP is to strengthen the neighborhood by promoting Safety, Security, and Wellness.
